The recently released movie “The Avengers” has already seen remarkable success. It has broken records and entertained millions already. This success however was not a surprise. It was not a fluke. It was a strategically planned business endeavor that can be mirrored in your business.
The Avengers movie was developed and produced by Marvel Entertainment, led by Kevin Feige, President. After the release of the first Ironman movie, he made the decision to make 4 more movies-The incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America. These prequels would lead to the giant team up for the Avengers movie. Feige’s team, including director and producer Jon Favreau, started planning the Avengers while developing the Ironman movie. They incorporated the idea into that movie and then laid out the plan to eventually reach this outcome with the studio and his team.
Feige and his team used strategic planning, a five year marketing plan, an unbelievable ability to execute, teamwork, a singular vision and mission, ability to recruit talent and other business concepts to achieve this level of accomplishment. After the release of Ironman and its success, the groundwork had been laid. They followed that up with the 4 other prequels. Each one was a hit in its own right, but also a building block to the eventual Avengers movie. Here is a breakdown of how this worked so well.
The mission was simple and all steps led to its eventual reality. With a keen executive leading this project throughout its entirety, the strategic plan was able to be executed as long as the initial steps were profitable, successful and thought-out. Assembling the talent for each movie was critical and important to know where this was all leading to empress upon the team that this was a long term multi-project endeavor. This meant laying it out and negotiating multi picture deals, knowing what parts could be interchangeable, and a systematic consistency with each product.
The five year marketing plan was also instrumental in building not only an audience, but an increasing desire for the fan base. It delivered a frenzied atmosphere at the box office opening weekend. Each prequel left viewers wanting more and enticed to see the group of superhero’s brought together. Along with licensing and selling all the additional products, this made each franchise of the end product a critical piece. Other marketing tidbits that helped were: including comedy in the stories, using diversity with their choice of actors to attract a wide audience base, interesting trailers and cool accessories in the movie and prequels.
The focus and planning on this venture allowed all of the building blocks to stay on schedule and be produced in a manner to keep the end goal a reality. The execution was phenomenal. This occurred because of teamwork, leadership and talented people throughout the projects. An A-list of stars was involved. Samuel Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and many more were part of this incredible team. Directors including Jon Favreau, Joss Whedon, Kenneth Branagh and more were involved. The projects handled the succession of changing parts. All this happened and the studio was even sold, to The Walt Disney co., during the whole process. They overcame many obstacles along the way.
